A Scholarship For Me

A Full Ride Scholarship? That sounds like one of the best things imaginable. With a full ride scholarship I could get the money I need to go to college, get trained in my most interested area of study, and find the best possible paying job and make loads! But none of that matters to me. There are three major reasons I want to go to college. To get the best education in my soon to be career choice, start my true life experience, and to make my mother proud. With a full ride scholarship all of that would seem possible and affordable.

I am almost sure that I have decided to go into the field of radio broadcasting. After taking a year of broadcasting at the career center it has opened my eyes to the many possibilities. Not only is there my personal love, music, in radio, but there are many endless possibilities such as being a general manager and woking with advertisement making your own commercials. Music is the love of my life and what better possibilty is there to go into a career that includes something you truly enjoy and getting paid!

They say there is no other experience like college and I can't wait to find out what all the commotion is about. I want to experience college for myself. In college it is different because you are on your own. You don't have to limit yourself to your usual everyday click. You can meet new responsible adults and introduce to a view of life you've never seen before. You can only make college what you want. Life is what you make it some would say, and I want to set no limits on what I can achieve in life. In high school you could say they are training you, as if they are cramming information into your brain. In college they are not training, they are educating you; discovering information out of your brain. In college you can be many things, but most importantly you can be yourself.

My mother is the one person I owe my life to. She has worked hard her whole entire life just to better the life of our family. If I graduated from college I know that would make her the proudest mom in the world. Despite all the hard work from the two jobs my mom works we don't have the most money in the world, but we get by with what we do. If I got a full ride scholarship it would take an unbearable load off of us. There is no way we could afford the cost of college and student loans don't sound friendly at all. With a full ride scholarship and a college degree I would make my mom the proudest mom in the world. I live my life for my mother. If I could do that I would feel as if my life has been complete.

My Mom

"I try my hardest to give you a better life than I had growing up." Is what my mother told me when I was young. Ever since that day I have striven to be the best person I can to honor what she has given me. I always do the best I can to make her proud and give her thanks for what she has given me. She sets the example of the person everyone should be.
My mother Donna is a hard working, honest, loving, and caring mother. She is always there for me through anytime in my life and always believes in me. She has two jobs and works everynight until 10:00. She works so hard to keep paying the bills she barely has anytime for herself. Knowing she puts all of that hard work into our family, I give all of my hard work for her. Either it be getting the better grades in school or helping her clean house, I am always willing to do anything for her. She inspires me to always try my hardest and never give up.
My mother is always caring and thoughtful about other people. She respects other peoples opinions and always gives advice when needed. Whenever I didn't feel like going to football practice or baseball practice she would remind me, there's not much left on the season and its not that hard to stick it out. I am so glad she kept telling me that, I don't think I would be able look back on my childhood with happiness if I would have quit one of those sports. Whenever I go to my mom about tricky situations in life, even if I'm wrong, she will respect what my idea of facing it would be but at the same time tell me what would be the best way to do. And her way always works.
My mom sums up everything I want to be in life. I strive to be fearless and willing to take on any challenges that come in life. I intend on going to the University Of Nebraska at Lincoln to study radio broadcasting, and I plan on pursuing that dream to make my mom proud. The thing she wants most from me is to get a college degree and I will not let her down. My mom is the reason our family keeps together and I enormously respect that. I want to give my mom to be proud of me for what I have done in my life. I feel if she is proud I have given her something back for giving me an amazing life. I will always strive to be just like my mom; caring, respectful, loving, hard working, honest and true. I am a momma's boy and I'm not afraid to say I love my momma :).

My First Week as a College Student

English, the much dreaded course for every high school student. Me included. The first day I walk in confident I knew what was coming; reading, reading, a boatload of homework to a new level of difficulty, and did I mention reading? Was I right? Yes. Was I over-worrying? Definitely. The very first day I could tell my professor was unlike any other teacher I've had in high-school. She wasn't trying to cram stuff into our brains and test us over it at the end of the week. She was pulling views and opinions out of us many of us didn't know we had about topics we don't pay much attention to. We as a class go into a deep discussion of all of our views on topics such as power and how literacy relates to power. You may not have thought about that but if you're willing to put some time into it and think about it things get interesting. I know she has made me think of things I haven't had the slightest interest in thinking about. That's what motivates me to actually try this class out, I am sure what I will get in return at the end of the session will be worth every minute.

You have to expect homework that's just the way it is. You do not have to let the homework take control of you. It is not that hard to stay on top and responsibly make sure everything is done on time. After the very first day I realized that all of this homework was overwhelming, but I've never been challenged like this and I am willing to complete it. All it is is the same homework I got in high school English, just more in depth and more of it. The daily homework times 3, and it is still "do-able." After the first week I was proud of myself as I looked back and realized I was still on top of my work for the most part.

I have already learned a lot about myself and views I had on situations I haven't thought of in the past. We are reading President Barack Obama's autobiography Dreams From My Father and it has already gave me another point of view of things such as the racial wars that still went on not too long ago, and many will say still go on today. I am already becoming more open minded and forming my own opinions on new topics.

I am pleasantly surprised by the challenge this course gives me. It is unique and a different view from high school. I feel this will actually help me next year in my final year of high school. I can understand the challenge of college and realize high school is giving it to us so easy. I am glad I took this course and I know it will highly benefit me at the end and I am very thankful for this fortunate opportunity!

Residential Life with Summer Scholars

As I began to pack all of my things the night before I was constantly worrying about over-packing. I got all of my favorite shirts and had everything organized and I wanted to bring my whole room. I looked around and decided to stop packing things because I did not want to be the only kid bringing a load of things and look like a total dork! Much to my suprise I arrive there, and man could I have packed so much more! I walk in and enthusiastically welcomed by everybody I recieved my room key. Walk on in to my room and meet all of my roomates with no problem. As I walk by I just have to peek into their rooms to see how much they packed, and WOOOH! An iPod docking station? A laptop?! And I was worried about something as silly as overpacking? Ha there was no reason to worry about anything, I swiftly met everyone that very first day and we all seemed to click. In just the short time we've known eachother we bonded already and no one would have cared about a silly thing like over packing. As soon as we settled in it was stress free.
The first night we settled all the rules right off the bat and it was pretty funny seeing people we just met come up with curfews and expectations. The first two nights we set our curfew for 2:00 in the morning so we all met and introduced eachother that night. It started and finished as a great experience. The first night after coming back from Ashland, NE many of us played basketball and walked around then messed around in the game room.
Throughout the whole week of staying there we were always busy, either playing sand volleyball or watching a movie there always was something to do. I was so amazed that we got unlimited breakfast, lunch, and dinner all for free! And most importantly they had Chocolate Milk on tap, which was like Heavan for me. I felt like I really got to know all of the other summer scholars pretty well, I'm sure we will still talk in the future as well.
I am so glad I got the opportunity to do this and was accepted. It was a new experience in my life and without a doubt worth it. The people and activities were great. I loved the dorms and everything about the experience. I would recommend to anyone open for a great life experience!
